Fernando Alonso says he lost 12 pounds in the sweltering desert heat when racing at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Alonso’s drinking pump malfunctioned during the near two-hour race April 26, and he almost collapsed after finishing, having to be helped from the car.
“In Bahrain I had a very specific problem with not enough water in my body, because I lost 5 1/2 kilos in the race and this is obviously not normal,” the two-time Formula One champion said ahead of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix. “It was a problem with the radiator of the car, and we had some hot gas going into the cockpit, so I burned all my back with the seat and that was taking out even more water from my body.
