Padang Padang is a beach in Bali that is home to some of the most pristine warm-water tubes in the world. Unfortunately for surfers on the Indonesian island on Thursday, the waters were calm but something else was firing on shore: A fierce inferno that left numerous houses, homes and businesses burned to the ground.
As reported by SURFER, news of the fire started to spread Thursday afternoon after Pete Matthews, Rip Curl’s Indonesian chairman, took to Instagram to post a photo of his home as well as numerous other hotels and warungs (small Indonesian businesses that double as homesteads) engulfed in flames that apparently spread quickly by strong northern winds.
Matthews was working at his surf shop, less than a mile away from the blaze, when he got a phone call alerting him to the fire in progress and ran home to try to help contain the fire.
