Even by cycling’s dirty standards, the sport’s latest scandal seems shocking: A new, joint report by Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper and France’s Télévisions Stade 2 news station claims to have found evidence of rampant use of “mechanical doping” — the use of illegal, hidden motors within the frames of road bikes.
The terms “doping” and “competitive cycling” have long gone together like peanut butter and jelly: Between 1998 and 2012, 44 percent of top 10 finishers in the Tour de France were on illegal performance enhancing drugs.
