On October 28th, 2013, a gigantic swell hit the west coast of Portugal.
In a small fishing village called Nazaré, a place known for a special feature in the ocean bed, known as the North Canyon, waves were as big as 20 meters (about 60 feet) high. A very special group of big wave surfers from all around the world, came to this spot to ride these gigantic and powerful waves.
Apart from an accident with the Brazilian big wave surfer girl Maya Gabeira, which almost costed her life, all the surfers returned safe to the fishing harbor, and the surfing session is going to the surfing history books.
All the crew was led by the Hawaiian Garrett McNamara, known world wide for big wave riding. Image and edit by Miguel Costa
