High school surfers from Maui County will be able to officially represent their schools for the first time on Saturday in the Maui Interscholastic Surf Championships at Hookipa Beach Park.
The first unofficial meet between Maui County high schools took place in 1994, and the state Board of Education approved surfing as a high school sport in 2003.
Surfing teams remain clubs, not varsity teams, including at Saturday’s meet, which will have 10 schools represented — Baldwin, Hana, Kaahumanu Hou, Kamehameha Maui, King Kekaulike, Lahainaluna, Maui, Maui Preparatory Academy, Seabury Hall and St. Anthony…Â Details
