Valentino Rossi beat his Yamaha teammate and title rival Jorge Lorenzo to the fastest time in opening practice for the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano.
Dani Pedrosa completed the top three, although his Honda slowed to a halt on its way back to the pits at the end of the session.

Nicky Hayden has signed a one-year extension to his contract with Ducati to continue alongside Casey Stoner in 2010.
