Fourteen-time NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Funny Car champion John Force will be the guest speaker Wednesday night at the fourth annual Speedway Children’s Charities Mel Larson Night of Champions Dinner presented by AutoTrader.com.

This year’s event will honor American automotive and motorsports legend Carroll Shelby and will be held in the Bellagio Hotel & Casino’s Grand Ballroom in Las Vegas.

“Carroll sets the bar very high for everyone else in motorsports,” said Force, who has 126 NHRA Funny Car final-round wins to his credit. “He is truly a legend and I feel honored to be a part of any function that honors him and his accomplishments. We have a lot in common. We’re both racers; we’re both Ford guys and we’re both big storytellers. It’ll be great to get together with him again in Las Vegas.”…  Details

The California Surf Museum Board of Directors is excited to announce the opening of its new facility located at 312 Pier View Way in the City of Oceanside. This new facility is the first building built in the United States for specific use as a surf museum. The museum displays a significant part of the culture and heritage of surfing. Its Collection and Archives under the direction of Dr. Jean Keller is world class in its preservation and documentation. The funds generated from the Gala fundraiser will help CSM provide comprehensive audiovisual solutions integrating technology that will empower CSM to inspire and educate thousands of visitors each year.

The Gala Fundraiser will be held at the new California Surf Museum in Oceanside, CA on Thursday, May 14, 2009 from 5–10pm. There will be live music, a variety of fabulous food experiences, and a silent auction with many limited edition items.  …  Details

To help keep the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum open, Hula’s Island Grill and Tiki Room raised $800 for the local landmark while kicking off a new brunch menu Sunday.

Hula’s co-owner Ian McRae said after seeing all of the struggles the Santa Cruz Surfing Club Preservation Society has experienced during the past few months, he felt something had to be put together.

“My family has been in Santa Cruz for four generations,” McRae said. “I was born on West Cliff. We’re very aware of the history of surfing in Santa Cruz. It didn’t take much to put one and one together to pick the Surfing Museum to benefit from this fundraiser.”… Details

Rob Robertson recently motored his classic 1939 wooden cruiser up to a dock on Charleston’s wind-swept Cooper River and donated the $145,000 vessel to the South Carolina Maritime Foundation.

It’s the third vessel that the foundation that operates the tall ship Spirit of South Carolina has accepted in recent months, and four more donations are pending. And that success bucks the usual trend of boat donations tapering off in a sluggish economy.

Robertson’s boat, The Frolic, which would cost $748,000 if built today, will help the foundation’s mission of providing education programs on the water for students.
