Porsche is showcasing the future production version of its 918 hybrid project – and stealing the limelight at this week’s Detroit Auto Show – with this 756hp racecar, called 918 RSR.
The new model takes the powerplant originally showcased in the 918 Spyder at the 2010 Geneva show and builds on its power and efficiency. With a speed of 88.738 km/h (55.077 mph), the University of New South Wales’ (UNSW) Sunswift IVy has claimed the Guinness World Record for the fastest solar-powered vehicle. Porsche has stolen the opening day of the North American Auto Show in Detroit by unveiling the latest version of its 918 hybrid supercar.
Called the 918 RSR and billed as a racing laboratory, the concept combines hybrid technology from Porsche’s GT3 R hybrid race car with the styling of the 918 Spyder, first seen at 2010’s Geneva motor show.
In total the RSR has 756bhp; 555bhp comes from its mid-mounted V8 petrol engine (taken from Porsche’s RS Spyder LMP2 car) driven through a six-speed paddle-shift transmission to the rear wheels, and a further 201bhp  … Pictures & More
