Like all good things, the run of Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is coming to an end. While this is sad news for Mercedes enthusiasts, there is a silver lining: Mercedes is currently working on a new AMG sports car, and it’s rumored to rival Volkswagen’s Porsche 911 Turbo. The Porsche 959 is known as a road-going technological tour de force from the 1980s. It featured four-wheel drive, twin turbochargers, and a top speed nearing 200 miles per hour. And then in 1986, in won the Paris-Dakar Rally.

The 959 was initially developed by Porsche to take part in Group B racing, which was a set of standards devised for both track and rally racing. Despite Chevrolet’s best efforts, however, we’ve always had a hard time properly classifying the Corvette as a genuine sports car. Offered only as a roadster initially, it lacked the handling precision necessary to properly compete with the zippy small cars GIs were experiencing in postwar Europe. Subsequent ‘Vettes emphasized straight-line performance up until the outgoing model. But even it came up a little short in some areas – primarily interior refinement.
