Ian “Skip” Wilson, a retired Lake County mechanic, has been reunited with his beloved 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air 30-years after it was stolen from his home in Clearlake Oaks, California.
The story of Wilson and his ’57 Bel Air dates back to 1975, when he bough the dilapidated classic for just $375. Wilson spent countless hours getting the Bel Air back into shape, only to have it stolen in 1983. The cops eventually found the Bel Air, but with the engine and transmission removed. Even without those key parts the Bel Air proved too much for crooks to resist, and the car was stolen again in 1984. This time the Bel Air was gone for good, or so Wilson though.

When the original Batmobile rolled across the auction block at last year’s Barrett-Jackson auction, there was a familiar, gold bespectacled face on the stage to help sell the iconic ride. It was George Barris, who took over construction of the original car from Dean Jeffries in 1965. With all that cash, and with all the legitimate credits to his name – the Voxmobile, the Batmobile, the Beverly Hillbillies’ jalopy and hundreds of other cars – what would possess a guy to tarnish his own reputation by reinventing history, taking credit for things he never built? There’s some pathological need to be involved with every automotive creation in the last 50 years that defies explanation.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that a safe 102% of the readers of this site are fans of both cars and a vast and disgusting variety of sexual acts. And that’s great.
