I am a product of the Vietnam War. Though I’ve jokingly said that for years, it is true. During the war my mother was a Vietnamese civilian working as a translator for the United States Army in Saigon, where my father was stationed as an American helicopter pilot in the Navy. They met there. Just as the North Vietnamese were taking over Saigon on April 29, 1975, my mother fled Vietnam aboard a refugee boat amidst the historical chaos. My father was also on the coast, hovering overhead while commandeering his final mission in Vietnam. They were separated but four months later, my mother would ultimately relocate to San Diego where they reunited and eventually married.

In recent months, you may have seen an advertisement in your favorite surf magazine by Lost, a well-known surfboard/clothing manufacturer. There are three variations that I remember, but there may be more

In one, an Alex Knost-looking character is dolled up in the new punk style, with fake Ray Bans, a V-necked T-shirt, cutoffs and the tag line “If you don’t surf, don’t start” on the bottom of the page.

On the following page, a full color spread of a surfer blowing up on a wave is tagged by another headline, “If you surf, never stop.” Cute ad — and one I’m sure resonates with many surfers out there…  Details

Pacifica Beach Coalition (PBC) and Pedro Point Surf Club invite you to a benefit screening, reception, and big raffle for ” Finding Aloha,” on Friday, March 27th, at 6:30pm and 8:30pm at the Sanchez Art Center.  Filmmaker Phil Walker took 8 years to complete it and recently won “Best Documentary” at the Honolulu International Film Festival.  Producer and co-star Dan Moore, also a past Billabong XXL winner, will be on hand at the screening to field questions from the audience.

“Finding Aloha” tells a story of adventurous athletes like Layne Beachley, Dan Moore, Jimmy Hall, Vetea David and Mark Andersen, who find the key to harmony in the Hawaiian islands. They discover, and nurture, aloha. ( more … )
