Take eight experienced women riders from across North America, give them brand new touring motorcycles, set them loose in Northern Ontario for a few days and there are bound to be adventures. The F800GS jump-started the mid-sized enduro market in 2008, the best-selling S1000RR now dominates the superbike segment (nearly 25 percent of global sportbike sales in 2010 went to BMW), and the new K1600GT appears ready to revolutionize luxury touring. Taking business risks has really paid off: BMW Motorrad production is now back to pre-recession numbers, with 2010 global sales up 12.3 percent (to 98,047 motorcycles), out-performing the car division in profitability.

The rumors that Harley-Davidson has been eying a liquid-cooled motor design have always been in abundance, and 10 years ago we saw the company test the waters of that pool with the Porsche-engineered lump that was found in the V-Rod. While the VRSC line may not have been as big of a success compared to the other models in Harley’s line-up, the water-cooled bastard child of Milwaukee still seems to sell in the tens of thousands each year, even after nearly a decade of only cosmetic revisions.
