Lance Armstrong is not too old to win an eighth Tour de France, the 50-year-old Jeannie Longo said on Friday.

“He’s returning at 37 and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t work. I was 38 when I won my first Olympic gold medal,” Frenchwoman Longo told Reuters after taking second place in the women’s Swiss Grand Prix time trial behind Austrian Christiane Soeder, 34.

Alejandro Valverde will have to face the International Cycling Union (UCI) as well as the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) when he appears at an anti-doping tribunal, CONI said on Thursday.

The Spanish rider, who denies wrongdoing, was charged by CONI at the start of the month with being involved in Spain’s Operacion Puerto blood doping scandal.

CONI’s anti-doping prosecutor called for a two-year ban but any suspension agreed by the Italian anti-doping tribunal can be enforced only inside Italy…  Details

When Lance Armstrong fought through the final few meters of a climb through desolate mountains under a searing sun and across the finish line, he was not wearing a cape or even a yellow jersey.
