Four riders average 39.3 km/h for a day

Four cyclists completed a massive 970 kilometres of racing to win the inaugural 24 Hours of Le Mans cycling race at the weekend. Cyril Masson, Jimmy Aubert, Bruno Teillet and Sebastien Heron won the event, etching their name alongside some of motor sport’s greatest names on the track which is home to sports car racing’s oldest endurance event.

UCI president Pat McQuaid said on Sunday there had been no positive dope tests at this year’s Tour de France and looked to a drugs-free race being the future pattern.

McQuaid told Reuters: “At this point in time I haven’t heard of any positive tests at this year’s Tour de France or that we’re checking samples to confirm positives.

“It’s looking like the Tour de France will not have any positive tests for a number of years. I think that’s a big step forward for cycling.”

Staff at a World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory in Austria have been questioned by police investigating the supply of banned drugs to athletes.

Officials say Thursday the lab near Vienna is one of 35 WADA-accredited labs worldwide.

Guenter Greiner, head of the lab, says “we are most interested in clearing up possible allegations against employees and former employees.”  …  Details

Cycling powers France and the Netherlands have paid for poor results this season with a reduced quota of riders for the world championships.

The European nations will each start just six men in the road race staged Sept. 27 at Mendrisio, Switzerland, after both dropped out of the top 10 in the world rankings compiled by the International Cycling Union.

The entry lists were released Monday.

Britain, Norway and the United States reached the top 10 to claim the full quota of nine riders for elite nations in the 222-rider lineup, helped by good results from riders such as Mark Cavendish, Thor Hushovd and Lance Armstrong at the Tour de France last month…  Details
