Water skiing and wakeboarding are quite common hobbies. While most approach it as summertime recreation, certain students at Saint Mary’s have taken the sports up competitively. The Saint Mary’s Water ski and Wakeboard team began in February of 2008 with four members. Since then it has grown to include 13 students, seven men and six women.

Brian Detrick ’11 started the club team because of his long-standing passion for skiing. He wanted to ski at the collegiate level as well as offer the oppertunity to others to do the same “I wanted to share my passion for the sport with everyone else,” Detrick said. USA Water Ski has selected Chris Parrish (Orlando, Fla.) and Lauren Morgan (Odessa, Fla.) as its Male and Female Athletes of the Month, respectively, for March. Parrish and Morgan are now eligible for the United States Olympic Committee’s Athlete of the Month honors.

“That’s the best part. You’ve got 700 to 800 horsepower and put the pedal to the floor and feel the G-force push you back into your seat and hold on for the ride,” said Wade Metzinger.

Metzinger has been drag racing for 10 years, and for about five years at the Tulsa Raceway Park. Because he likes spending weekends at the track, he decided to drag his wife into racing as well.
