On day five of the DAM7 PWA Netherlands World Cup, the men’s double elimination was completed as a brief period of wind swept through Brouwersdam in the afternoon. Kiri Thode (Starboard / Gaastra) successfully defended his single elimination victory to clinch his first event victory since the 2011 Vietnam event ahead of Steven van Broeckhoven (JP / NeilPryde / Different). In the meantime Arrianne Aukes (RRD / Simmer / Maui Ultra Fins) fought back to book her place in the women’s double elimination winners’ final where she will face Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Gaastra / Mystic / Chris Benz / Maui Ultra Fins).

At the PWA Netherlands World Cup, having played the waiting game for much of the morning and early afternoon on day four, Brouwersdam burst into life to deliver several hours of perfect freestyle conditions, as winds of 20-25 knots combined with flat water created the ultimate windsurfing playground for the contortionists of the windsurfing world. The competition for the day was eventually concluded just before 8:20pm as fading light brought an end to the explosive proceedings.

At the PWA Netherlands World Cup, the epic forecast promising winds in excess of forty knots for day three didn’t disappoint as the wind howled for much of the afternoon and grew stronger as the evening progressed. Today was more like the PWA’s very own storm chase at times as the sailors reached for their smallest gear – many wishing they had smaller equipment available – to take on the brutal winds.
