SAN DIEGO — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB) has acquired an advanced-design high-speed interceptor vessel for inspection, evaluation and pursuit of smugglers’ boats entering U.S. waters.

The 43-foot 1,400 hp “go-fast” test vessel has been making the rounds in different U.S. ports. It made an appearance in Texas in late July and is scheduled to remain berthed in San Diego for two weeks.

CBP’s Office of Air and Marine personnel in San Diego is testing the Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator (ACTD) for possible future purchase by CBP…  Details

Powerboat P1 World Championship. Lucas Oil Outerlimits pilots Nigel Hook and Joe Sgro are both in good spirits despite sustaining minor injuries in Sunday’s Evolution Class Endurance Race.

Neither pilot endured serious injury with Hook suffering facial bruising and a mild concussion whilst Sgro experienced short-term memory loss.

Reflecting on the incident, a cheerful Hook said he felt ‘as fit as a twenty-year-old.’

Having returned to the dry-pits to observe the terminal damage to the Lucas Oil Outerlimits hull, Hook said: ‘We’re both fine – in better shape than the boat anyway – there’s a little bit of soreness there…  Details

The powerful two-boat Qatar team has withdrawn from the remainder of the UIM Class 1 Offshore series, citing ‘misconduct and bad sportsmanship’ as behind the decision.

Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor, president of the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF), said the Qatar team would not be taking part in any of the remaining four races.

The Sheikh partners offshore legend and throttleman Steve Curtis in the Qatar 96 boat, while Abdullah Al Sulaiti and Matteo Nicolini handle the Qatar 95 boat.

It is rumoured that another team, believed to be Norwegian, is also contemplating pulling out of the championship, while Australia’s Bill Barry-Cotter, owner of the two boat Maritimo team, has come out in full support of the Qatar team…  DetailsÂ
