They can be the most dangerous and powerful racing machines known to man in large part due to the speeds they can attain, the highly volatile fuel needed to power the craft and the unique design and balance of the hulls built to withstand ever changing elements of wind and water. Photographer Robert Brown first caught my attention in the late 1990s during a long bus ride on the way to a Sea-Doo media event outside of Montreal, Canada. It was a solid two-hour bus ride from the airport to a quaint little lakeside resort in the middle of Canadian nowhere, the bus was well-stocked with libations and Brown was holding court and carrying on with the various magazine editors on board in his usual boisterous and flat-out hilarious style.

When a big-wave surfer falls on a big-wave, he rarely penetrates the water immediately. First, like a water-skier, he’s going too fast so he bounces off the surface. Second, he’s wearing a slick and buoyant wetsuit, a life vest and maybe even, if he’s on the cutting edge of the sport, an integrated automatic buoyancy device that will inflate and drag him up from the depths he’ll eventually get pounded to.
