The ICF Freestyle World Championships Monday through Sept. 8 will bring hundreds of the globe’s top paddlers and thousands of daily spectators to the snug and stunning Nantahala River Gorge.
Though it is a world-class sporting event, the championships will have a Western North Carolina twist, said Charles Conner, marketing director for the Nantahala Outdoor Center, which is hosting the event.

For the last three years, waterfall huckster Rafa Ortiz has been sizing up the grand-daddy of them all, Niagara Falls.
Yesterday, with all the pieces in place for the historic first descent, he walked away from the 167-foot behemoth.
