UNLV engineering students hard at work building canoe for national competition
It is a canoe, precisely 20 feet long, precisely 30 inches wide. It was engineered to weigh as little as possible, a trim 250 pounds.
It is made of concrete. It has floated. It will soon compete in a race.
These facts create a paradox: buoyant concrete.
The canoe is quite nice looking, with a glass mosaic, a gleaming paint job and a nickname tagged on its side. It’s the result of nearly a year of hard work.

The 31st annual Hockanum River canoe and kayak race will be held April 5.
Somewhat of a moving target over the years, the race will be held on the first Sunday in April rain or shine. Some past years, the annual race has been postponed due to the river’s level being too high or too low. Patience paid off at Steamer Lane on Sunday as conditions picked up just in time for the finals of the 23rd annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival.
Chris Harvey from Guernsey, England earned himself the first-place medal in the High Performance men’s division to repeat as champion.

SANTA CRUZ — The waves haven’t been as kind to Santa Cruz Surf Kayak Festival competitors as it was at last year’s event, but that hasn’t stopped more than 100 kayakers, wave skiers and — for the first time — stand-up paddle boarders from taking over Steamer Lane this weekend for the three-day event.
