The New England Handicapped Sports Association (NEHSA) is pleased to announce that the 2009 Adaptive Kayak Program will begin on Saturday May 16th. The program is open to adults and children that have physical and developmental disabilities. NEHSA provides all equipment, including kayaks, paddles, PFDs, and any required adaptive equipment. The kayak instruction will be provided at Pawtuckaway Pond (locations will vary each week). Need to register in advance.

Imagine surfing in Utah on an endless wave. That’s pretty much what you can do this time of year, right in the middle of the city of Riverdale.

On Tuesday expert kayakers took advantage of that opportunity, which was created, believe it or not, by a sewer district, just for fun.

If you do things right at the Riverdale Wave, you can point your bow up the Weber River and just sit there as long as you can take it.

“You’ve got a great surf spot in the pile, the white pile, that keeps us on there, kind of like you see surfers do. It allows us to stay in one place but feel like you’re moving,” explained Jesse Coombs, professional kayaker and filmmaker…  Details & Video

The teams in the Indian Ocean Rowing Race have now been at sea for three weeks, and the race leaders are speeding toward their first 1,000 mile mark. All of the teams seem to be moving more comfortably now as they settle into their routines and get used to life at sea. The conditions have also been a bit kinder this week, and crews have been able to take better advantage of any favourable wind and currents.

Happily, we finish this week with the same number of boats as we started with, as there have been no further retirements – but that doesn’t mean it’s all plain sailing (or rowing!).
