The teams in the Indian Ocean Rowing Race have now been at sea for three weeks, and the race leaders are speeding toward their first 1,000 mile mark. All of the teams seem to be moving more comfortably now as they settle into their routines and get used to life at sea. The conditions have also been a bit kinder this week, and crews have been able to take better advantage of any favourable wind and currents.

Happily, we finish this week with the same number of boats as we started with, as there have been no further retirements – but that doesn’t mean it’s all plain sailing (or rowing!). Walk north over the Arlington Street Bridge in Reno, and as you are crossing look to your right at the Truckee River down below.
You’ll probably see local professional Stephen Wright in his yellow kayak, twisting in the rapids.

Like many local kayakers, the 31-year-old is preparing for the 6th annual Reno River Festival that starts today at Wingfield Park. But for Wright, preparing and training for the festival feels like something else.

“(I’m) doing a lot of paddling getting ready for (the Reno River Festival),” Wright said. “But it’s all just fun. It’s not really training as much as going out and playing and trying to do as much as possible. It’s hard to consider it training when you are just having a good time.”

The event is presented by the Gulf Coast Kayak Fishing Association along with help from a number of sponsors including Hobie, Hooters, and Academy Sports.

The GCKFA is a non-profit organization focused on promoting kayak fishing throughout Northwest Florida and South Alabama. The association has a number of activities and events each year including tournaments, rigging workshops, social gatherings, and fishing trips.

The entry fee of $50 per angler will include entry into both the inshore and offshore categories and a Hobie Captains Bag for the first 75 anglers…  Details
