997-ppk1PORSCHE, to most people, is a sports car. To me, it can be a time machine. Even a new Porsche loaded with technogadgets— a 2009 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, in this case — stirs fond recollections.

It takes me back to 1967. A red 356 Speedster of uncertain 1950s vintage, tossed from one corner to the next, in and out of fog banks, as I furiously shift through the gears on the drive south on California Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast. GMC and Buick survive the cuts, while Saturn, Saab and Hummer will be gone by the end of the year

As he faced the media this week and announced the death of the Pontiac brand, GM CEO Fritz Henderson testily defended the decision by attacking “frankly disconcerting” coverage of whether it should have been the GMC truck brand or Buick to receive the axe.

Chrysler LLC has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, CNNMoney.com reported on Thursday. But a deal has been reached to combine the company with Fiat in order to allow Chrysler to stay in business.

The bankruptcy filing, which was made in federal court in New York, comes after some of Chrysler’s smaller lenders refused a Treasury Department demand to reduce the amount of money the troubled automaker owed them.

That’s what a team of Ford engineers, a hypermiling legend and NASCAR star Carl Edwards managed to pull off this week, registering an average of 81.5 mpg in a 1,445.7-mile journey designed to show off the eco prowess of the new hybrid sedan.

The crew left Mount Vernon, Va., on Saturday morning and finished on the George Washington Parkway in Washington, running out of gas just before dawn. They clicked off the 1,000-mile mark–the original goal– Monday morning, with Edwards at the wheel… Details
