What makes for the best racing? What do people prefer? A Sunday afternoon or Saturday night watching the big boys of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series or a Saturday night at your favorite local paved or dirt 1/4-mile bullring?

Just to keep this from blooming into a wide open discussion, I am going to limit this to stock car, sprint cars and midgets for the most part. Obviously there are many out there that prefer NHRA, Formula One, Indy Car Racing etc..  NASCAR’s latest attempt to tap into a younger, more tech-savvy fan base comes in a form of a social networking site for Kevin Harvick, the popular NASCAR driver of the Richard Childress Racing number 29 Shell Pennzoil Chevrolet Impala SS car.

Based on the Ning platform, the Fan Central website was launched by a media solutions provider TrendyMinds, allowing users to create personalized pages, post to forums and blogs, chat online, share and comment on pictures and videos, create groups and Twitter feeds, and even stream music. Since its January 2009 launch, it has amassed 1800 members, adding about 170 new users daily.

Fantasy NASCAR players thrive on constants. Uncertainty doesn’t sit well when trying to predict drivers’ fortunes over the course of a 36-race season.
There will be fewer constants to bank on in 2009, largely the result of the economic crisis that has rocked the sport’s core. Team mergers, the lack of sponsorships and mass driver changes will make the fantasy aspect of the sport much more of a guessing game than in the past….  More info
