The Richard Petty racing experience is coming to a new venue next month—the Indianapolis 500.

And this is no ride-along, publicity stunt or gimmick.

The King of NASCAR plans to take his first crack at winning IndyCars’ crown jewel by putting one of his former drivers, John Andretti, in the cockpit of an open-wheel car co-owned with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.

“I’m not here just to be having fun,” Petty said during Monday’s announcement. “I’m serious about this stuff. So we come here for a serious deal.”

Mark Martin, Greg Biffle, Juan Montoya and Matt Kenseth executed a net gain of 21 positions in the Sprint Cup standings after Sunday’s Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway; and in the case of Biffle and Montoya, they were both coming forward at race’s end on the race track, as well.

Biffle ended the day a fast-closing third; Kenseth had his first top-five finish since he won the season’s first two races, in fifth; Martin was sixth and Montoya right behind him in seventh.

About an hour before Friday’s qualifying round, shortly before driver David Gilliland strapped into his No. 71 Chevrolet, conspicuous by the blank space on the blue car’s hood where a sponsor’s logo belongs, upstart team owner Kevin Buckler arrived at the TRG Motorsports hauler at Texas Motor Speedway.

Inside the outfitted 18-wheeler, the team’s race-week headquarters, Buckler touted his team’s modest successes through six races on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit and its loftier goals, while scraping by.

It’s Rick Hendricks Racing world and we are just watching it. Hendrick drivers Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson finished first and second Sunday in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway and also match those positions in the overall series point standings. It was Gordon’s first win at Texas in 17 tries.
