Surfers gather to tackle 13km tidal bore

Surfing a wave is usually all about catching a few fleeting moments of fun – but for these surfers it’s more about staying power.

Dressed head-to-toe in toasty wetsuits, surfers from around the world flocked to the Severn on Wednesday to ride a 13km (eight-mile) tidal bore.

The phenomenon saw a 1.2m (4ft) wave flow into the Severn Estuary, which has the second-biggest tidal range in the world.

But, while the surfers had their fun, spectators ran for higher ground as the surge pushed a storm-swollen river to burst its banks in places. …  More info

Surfer hit by first Bondi beach shark attack for 80 years

A shark attacked a surfer at Bondi Beach yesterday, almost severing one of his hands, in the first reported attack in 80 years at Australia’s most iconic beach.

The 33-year-old man was having a sunset surf off south Bondi when he felt something brush his arm while paddling out to catch a wave.

Realising he had been bitten he called out for help to a group of surfers, who went to his aid…  More info

Truck ‘surfer’ injured

A Colfax man sustained facial injuries Monday afternoon after allegedly “surfing” on his friend’s pickup truck in Chicago Park.

Richard Griggs, 30, was taken to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital at about 1 p.m. Monday after he allegedly tried to “surf” on the right side running board of a 2002 Ford F150 pickup …  More info

Another Good Day of Surfing for 2009 Hang Loose Pro Contest

Four past winners of the Hang Loose Pro Contest stills in the game for a second title in the historic tenth edition in Fernando de Noronha (PE). The current champion Brazilian Raoni Monteiro and Brazilians Jean da Silva won their heats, while Brazilians Guilherme Herdy and Victor Ribas finished in second and move on into the round of the 48 best surfers. Other stars who also had great performances was Brazilians Hizunome Bettero, Fabio Gouveia, Simao Romao and the two times World Pro Junior Champion, Pablo Paulino, which recorded the highest heat total score of the event so far.

As the limit of time to stay on the beach is 6 pm, two heats failed to close the Round of 96. The waves fell slightly on Tuesday, but the tubes continued pulling the highest scores…  More info
