I went surfing with Patrick Ivison recently. Actually, he surfed… I just flailed around like a wild chicken barely balancing on a board. Patrick got a rush. I got a gallon of water in my mouth. Patrick wanted to spend the rest of the day in the water. I wanted to get out. So I grabbed my board and walked towards the beach. Patrick couldn’t follow me.

FINDING ALOHA | Friday March 27th benefit film screening with Dan Moore

 Update — Frank Quirarte, Mavericks’ Photographer to Speak on Big Wave Surfing

Pacifica Beach Coalition (PBC) and Pedro Point Surf Club invite you to a benefit screening, reception, and big raffle for “ Finding Aloha,” on Friday, March 27th, at 6:30pm and 8:30pm at the Sanchez Art Center.  Filmmaker Phil Walker took 8 years to complete it and recently won “Best Documentary” at the Honolulu International Film Festival.  Producer and co-star Dan Moore, a past Billabong XXL winner, and Pacifica’s Frank Quirarte — the prolific surf photographer known for his Mavericks’ coverage and one of the forces behind Mavsurfer.com   — will both be on hand at the screening to field questions from the audience. )

“Finding Aloha” tells a story of adventurous athletes like Layne Beachley, Dan Moore, Jimmy Hall, Vetea David and Mark Andersen, who find the key to harmony in the Hawaiian islands. They discover, and nurture, aloha. ( more

museumThe California Surf Museum will reach a new crest in its sun-soaked history Thursday when it celebrates its grand opening in its new home at 312 Pier View Way.

The event marks a new milestone for the funky museum, which debuted in 1986 in the back of an Encinitas restaurant and now fills a 6,000 square foot art-deco style building in the heart of downtown Oceanside.

“There’s waves, there’s waves!” shouted one of the frothing groms upon arrival this past weekend at the CSF FREEDOM surf comp down at Mission Beach.

John Lindsley the CSF competition director was equally ecstatic as the surf report had called for less than stellar knee to waist high surf. Said John, “I’m so stoked, the sun is out and the waves are looking really fun. God is good.”
