“Chasing Mavericks” is biopic surf movie about the short, intense and real surf life of Jay Moriarity. The inspirational true story of the iconic surfing phenom is played by Jonny Weston.

A handful of pop-up tents, scattered beach chairs and a few dozen spectators were all that remained of last year’s East Coast Surfing Championships.

The scene took George Desgain back – 50 years back.

Bill Bouton, a retired biology instructor, was having little success photographing birds along the California coast Saturday, but fortunately a small pod of humpback whales arrived to save the day. Bouton’s incredible images, captured off San Luis Obispo, show humpback whales lunge-feeding a mere stone’s throw from shore–and much closer to boaters, kayakers and paddlers (including a woman in a dress; see first image) who seemingly could not resist getting as close as possible to the powerful leviathans   …  Pictures and more

Mimi Munro’s face lights up when she talks about the first time she stepped on a longboard.

Some boys in her Ormond Beach neighborhood dared her, and the self-described “tomboy” would not back down. Munro hopped on and a legend was born.

“Historically speaking, she is the number one female longboarder to come out of this area,” Bruce Miller, 59, the owner of Salty Dog Surf Shop, said. “Nobody, nobody, nobody can match her then or now.”     …  More
