All over the world, the humble little dinghy boat is the safe and simple introduction to boating for millions of people. Not in the town of Renmark, on the banks of South Australia’s Murray River, however. There, in the otherwise sleepy town of just 8,000 souls, they like to strap souped-up outboard engines to their little dinghies and then race them at speeds of up to 80kph in a race that since 1981 has grown a deserved reputation as one of the fastest and wildest events on water, the Riverland Dinghy Derby.
You have most likely never heard of the island of New Britain. Despite its familiar-sounding name, it’s nowhere near its namesake – the island sits off the east side of Papua New Guinea, of which it is a province.
It is a relatively large island at 15,724 sq km, and surely one of the least explored places in the world. It’s the perfect place to undertake an adventure – and for Ben Stookesbury, Chris Korbulic, Pedro Oliva and Ben Marr, one that got them nominated for the National Geographic Adventurers of the Year award.
With no chance for rescue, resupply, or traditional support, the boys went in, and came out alive with a helluva a story to share. Check out this video for a glimpse into their grand adventure.
