LAHAINA – These are heady times for Lahainaluna High School and Napili Canoe Club paddling coach Joey Tihada, as both the Maui Interscholastic League and Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championship regattas will be held at Hanakao’o Beach Park (Canoe Beach) on consecutive weekends.
The MIL event was held last Saturday, and the state championships – which will bring 24 Hawaii high school crews to Canoe Beach – is scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 7.
But cool, collected Coach Joey is a veteran canoe paddling leader here on Maui, and he will be assisted by Mike Tihada and Kekoa Mowat in preparing for the big meets…Â More infoÂ

Sergio Mora Carrasco has confirmed he will run a new, two-boat Spanish Team this season, which brings a new engine-builder and boat manufacturer into the sport, taking the number of teams to nine and boats competing in Class 1 offshore powerboat racing in 2009 to 13.
Team Spirit of Spain sees Spaniard, Carrasco and Italian throttleman, Giovanni Carpitella, continue the partnership that they formed in Dubai last season where they finished an impressive fourth in the final race of the year. U-13 driver J. Michael Kelly returns to New Zealand on Thursday to drive in the 2009 Union International Montoniquie World Grand Prix Hydroplane Championship, driving “The Boss.”
Kelly is currently in 7th place with 127 points going into the final weekend of racing.
“The Boss,” hadn’t been racing on the GP circuit in the past 3 years and ran into some mechanical problems during the first weekend of competing. According to Kelly, he lost the cowling in his first run but finished 2nd in the re-start. In the next race, a gear box went out.
Since then, changes have been made to the boat. They plan further testing before the weekend to determine final race set-ups… More info
