Ken Lupton hung on with half one side of his boat missing to win the first round of the world grand prix hydroplane championship in Tauranga two weeks ago and has worked around the clock since to repair the damage.

When tragedy struck a Girl Scout troop here, the girls stepped up to help a fellow scout’s family.
Troop leader Jennie Perrottet, 44, of Berlin Township, had a massive heart attack early in the morning on Jan. 14.
“What happened to my troop leader was tragic,” said Caitlyn Sullivan, 13, of Berlin Borough. “Earlier that night at our meeting she was fine as can be. We were talking about what to do with the cookie money and where we were going. She was going to take us on a four-day white-water rafting trip.”
They quickly decided to sacrifice the proceeds from their annual cookie sales for the rafting trip to help Perrottet’s family…Â More info
Conditions were trying, very trying, with lots of thrills, spills and ditches; , equipment lost overboard, breakages on boats and sailors bodies as they struggled with huge lumpy dumpy seas and high winds which started at 18 knots from the south west and reached 24 knots by the end of the race. Only the experienced sailors made it to the finish line, but those who did enjoyed blood curdling breath taking magic reaches, if somewhat hairy with the balance (see pics).
