After 10 days of patient waiting, the sea-starved crew of the Hokulea finally left Hawaii yesterday evening just before sunset. The voyaging canoe’s course is now set for the remote Palmyra Atoll, some 1,000 miles south of Hawaii in the Line Islands.
As previously reported here, Hokulea was originally scheduled to leave Friday, Feb. 27 from its dock at Oahu’s Sand Island. Cloudy weather, unpredictable winter winds and choppy ocean conditions kept pushing the date back. The 2008-09 Adventure Series at Mystic Seaport continues with “Vietnam: By Land and By Sea,†a presentation given by writer, photographer and cruising sailor Bernadette Bernon Thursday, March 19 at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Bernon is the former editor of Cruising World and co-author of Maiden Voyage, a book selected in 1998 by the American Library Association as one of the Best Books for Young Adults. In 2008, the author spent a month exploring Vietnam on land and then chartered a 38-foot sailboat and traced the country’s coast. Sales of recreational power boats in the U.S. may decline by more than 20% this year, as consumers continue to avoid purchases of luxury items in a weak economy, Brunswick Corp. (BC) Chief Executive Dustan McCoy said Tuesday.
McCoy said power boat sales volume may fall below 150,000 units from 196,000 boats in 2008. Brunswick, the world’s largest producer of recreational boats, has been aggressively paring back its production in response to the falling demand.
