kauiLIHU’E, Kaua’i — When the state has no money to fix a road to a popular park on Kaua’i, local residents don’t just sit on their hands. They bring in the heavy equipment and do it themselves.

Volunteers are making major repairs to open an access road to West Kaua’i’s premier state beach park, Polihale, which has been closed since December.

The state said in February it didn’t have money to fix the road, which was washed out by heavy rains late last year…  Details and Pictures

At 04:05:30 GMT on Friday 3rd April, 45 year-old, Belgian solo sailor, Michel Kleinjans crossed the finish line of the Portimão Global Ocean Race Leg 3 on his 12 year-old Open 40, Roaring Forty, after 41 days, 02 hours, 50 minutes and 30 seconds and 7,500 miles of racing from Wellington, New Zealand.

To the amazement of the double-handed entries, Kleinjans remained in touch with the Class 40 fleet throughout the Southern Ocean, even taking the overall lead of the fleet on Day 6 of racing and only losing ground in the descent from the Pacific Ocean Ice Gate at 45°S to Cape Horn at 56°S.

His balance of fast racing; skilled boat handling and boat preservation; accurate weather analysis took … Details

marine-42Neither six-foot seas nor rough economic waters could hinder the on-water debut of STATEMENT! Marine’s new 42 “Ultimate,” the newest entry into the custom high-performance V-bottom market. The boat was launched during the Poker Runs America season opener in St. Petersburg, FL, the location of STATEMENT’s manufacturing facility.

According to spokesman Gene Weeks, the gnarly water conditions during the recent St. Petersburg event were perfect for showing off the new boat’s exclusive design features. The 42 Ultimate exceeded all expectations; “We knew she was a good boat, but we did not know she was THAT good,” Weeks stated with pride.

Of 82 boats that left St. Petersburg marina, only eight boats and three of them V-bottoms, were bold enough to take on the Gulf of Mexico and travel 20 miles to the planned lunch stop. Most of the fleet turned back instead of challenging the 6-8-foot seas in the mouth of Tampa Bay.

“Hats off to Mark Spates, who designed the aerodynamic hull!” …  Details

Latest from Paul Larsen and Vestas Sailrocket.

Yesterday we got out early to make the most of the early tide. Conditions looked good so we didn’t hang around at the timing hut but went straight to the top of the nautical mile course for another shot at the title. Just as we left the beach a strong gust came and whipped up the sand. Things settled and in short time we were ready for a run.

I felt good based on that run we had done a few days ago in stronger conditions. I was eager to replicate the start-up and peg Vestas Sailrocket along the shore. We were getting reports of gusts to 25 knots so I decided to sail in a softer mode which I hoped would be sufficient for the mile record without endangering the boat. I was going to set the wing at 15 degrees with the main flap pulled on.

The start up went great and it was one of the cleanest courses I had ever sailed. I was right along the shore and … Details
