Save The Waves Coalition presents its third annual Life Is A Wave benefit event, a yearly celebration of coastal environmentalism through music, art, film, and community activism. Life Is A Wave 2009 will roll in on May 14 from 6pm ’til midnight, once again at 111 Minna Gallery in downtown San Francisco. The multimedia event will feature live music from several innovative new bands, including Bay Area heavyweights Bayonics, as well as the fast-rising Kapakahi – both known for their dynamic mix of world beats and highly energetic live shows. Opening will be Clif Bar Inc.’s own Dung Beetles, along with DJs M3, OmarEtch, and DJ Paul.

This year Save The Waves will honor Reef founder, International Surfing Association President and philanthropist Fernando Aguerre as recipient of the 2009 Wave Saver Award, for his work and support defending coastlines around the world.

Sponsors of Life Is A Wave 2009 include Billabong B9, Clif Bar, Jim Beam, Joie de Vivre Hotels, Mavericksâ„¢, New Belgium Brewing, Ocean Vodka, Patagonia, Quiksilver Foundation, SIGG, Surfline, Zola Acai, and 1% For The Planet.. Additional sponsors will be announced closer to the event date.

It’s crazy enough that some guys go surfing on chilly Lake Superior at all, but this Madeline Island, Wis. bear just took it too far. At least the poor thing survived.

People on the Madeline Island ferry spotted a sad sight earlier this month: A bear stuck on a giant chunk of ice floating out on Lake Superior. It’s like the Midwest version of polar bears on ice…  Details & Pictures

… The opening salvos in what promises to be a tense tactical battle to the finish of Leg 6 were fired this morning in the North Atlantic. Telefonica Blue was first to blink, going into StealthPlay at the 07:00 GMT Position Report.

The gap between Telefonica Blue and Ericsson 4 had closed to six miles at the time. Under the amended sailing instructions for Stealth this leg, Bouwe Bekking and his men will come out of hiding at 19:00 GMT.

Bekking hinted yesterday that there would be a flurry of Stealth cards before Boston Harbour comes into view, and he was right. Ericsson 4 followed suit at 10:00 GMT…  Details
