A 24 year old woman made history this week, when she arrived in Mauritius to become the first female ever to row across the Indian Ocean solo. Sarah Outen spent over 124 days at sea in her quest to enter the records books, battling high winds, huge waves, and total isolation from any human contact save electronic forms.  However, ‘Sarah the Stubborn’ didn’t make this treacherous journey simply for the glory; she did it for far loftier goals.  She did it for those, like her late father, for whom just getting through the day can be a constant battle against nature.

Sarah is an Oxford University graduate, and was rowing to raise awareness and money for Arthritis Care, a charity close to her heart. She dedicated her voyage to her father, who had suffered terribly with rheumatoid arthritis before passing away in June 2006. Sarah said …  Details & Pictures

Forty seven-year-old Australian “adrenaline junkie” Sean Langman will attempt to break the 50-knot sailing speed barrier with his half sailboat, half plane, after a serious crash last summer.

Langman, a shipyard owner and yachtsman, is intent on beating the French-set record within the next few weeks, with the “Wot Rocket,” a canoe-style pod with a nine meter-long rigid sail.

The Wot Rocket is waiting for confirmation from the World Sailing Speed Record Council to attempt, once again, an unprecedented technology known as “supercavitation” — sailing just above the water in a gas bubble created by the deflection of water. This is to to …   Details

At half past seven in Le Bouveret, photographers and TV crew board the RIBs that will take them close to Alinghi 5, for her first taste of the sea, at Genoa, Italy.

Meanwhile the Super Puma helicopter is lifting the mast from its cradle. The mast has been rigged with a small sail and chute so it will fly in alignment with the helicopter. It soon disappears in the valley in direction to the Grand-Saint-Bernard pass which is at an altitude of close to 2500 meters, some 8200 feet. It took close to an hour to reach the pass; the Super Puma flew over the pass itself and soon started to descend towards Italy.

Just after 0830hrs the Russian Mil Mi-26T helicopter took off from Lausanne and then arrived over the lake to pick up the over 100 feet catamaran…  Details & Pictures

The simple measurement rules for the 33rd America’s cup have been published ahead of the New York Supreme Court hearing on 10 August to consider the Customs House Registry issue.

Societe Nautqiue de Geneve has defined a set of seven measurement rules for the Deed of Gift event.

In an accompanying letter, SNG officials state:

‘The purpose of the measurement will be to confirm that the dimensions of GGYC challenging vessel are the same as the dimensions certified by you, yourself as Commodore, in the Certificate of name, ownership, rig and specified dimensions, which was attached to your notice of challenge dated July 11, 2007…

…  At first blush the rules appear to be quite standard, however as with everything in this America’s cup there is a sting in the tail with the boats to be measured with crew aboard, to be in ‘load’ condition.

Normally waterlines are measured with all sailing gear aboard, and with the crew weighed separately, off the boat, if there is a weight restriction.

The rules sting could work against BMW Oracle Racing, at this stage, as they do not have a motor on their trimaran BOR90 to power winches, and instead carry an extra eight grinders – or close to a tonne of live weight…  Details
