America’s team BMW Oracle Racing (BOR) has taken full advantage of a “wide open” set of design rules for this year’s America’s Cup to produce one of the most staggering and ambitious vessels ever seen on the water. Throwing out the cloth main sail, team BOR have fitted the BOR 90 with a gargantuan, motorized, solid carbon-fiber wing, nearly twice the size of a Boeing 747 wing at 190ft, or 57 metres tall. The premier sailing convention for women is set to launch on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona del Mar, CA. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.) is primary sponsor of the 21st Annual Women’s Sailing Convention, presented by the Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA).
The event is open to all women from novices to experts and the 2010 program is packed with 28 workshops to choose from — both on and off the water — including: Welcome Aboard (for beginners), Suddenly Single-handed, Sail Trim, Cruising Preparedness, Provisioning, Racing Intro, Diesels, Basic Navigation, Anchoring, Spinnaker Rigging, First Aid and Going Offshore. On a recent afternoon under slightly cloudy skies with a hint of chill in the air, about 18 employees of Hawaiian Electric Company gathered at Kailua Beach for a paddling practice session. Some are novices, others haven’t picked up a paddle in over a decade, and just a handful are experienced year-round paddlers. Their mission: to train hard, have fun and represent the company in the 25th Annual Ala Wai Challenge, a fundraiser event for the Waikiki Community Center that combines a quarter-mile outrigger canoe race with traditional Hawaiian sports.
