The UK based team behind the Vestas Sailrocket project are building a new boat to finish the job of setting the outright world speed sailing record. BMW Oracle Racing, the American challenger, representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club, won the 33rd America’s Cup Match on Sunday in Valencia, sweeping past the Swiss defender, Alinghi, to a 2-0 victory. 

This was an historic race for the oldest trophy in international sport, featuring two of the most innovative boats on the planet.

Challenger BMW ORACLE Racing Team (USA) scored the vital first win in the best-of-three race series that is the 33rd America’s Cup off Valencia, Spain. 

The American team, sailing under the flag of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Yacht Club, were quickly able to overturn an early mistake when they were caught flat footed on the wrong side of the start line.

The big ocean rowing news this week is the arrival of Britannia III in Barbados – huge congratulations to her international mixed crew of 12 who completed their Atlantic crossing in 38 days, 11 hours and 7 minutes – a time that will be engraved on their memories for ever. Although there must be a level of disappointment amongst the crew that they missed the record that they were aiming to break, there’s no taking away their massive achievement in rowing 3,000 miles across an ocean.
