A Maui club gives thanks for the gift of a koa log by paddling between all the main Hawaiian Islands
A koa tree fell in a Big Island forest — and a Maui canoe club heard it.
Na Kai ‘Ewalu Canoe Club had been without a koa canoe since its prized canoe, Kealaikahiki, was destroyed by a vandal’s fire 13 years ago.
The club tried for years to locate a suitable log on Maui. But a 100-year-old koa tree, straight and strong for the 45 feet needed to make a six-seat canoe, is not easy to find.

Devastating 8.8 earthquake off coast of Chile sends tsunami; predicted to hit Hawaii at 11:20am + SoCal at 12:20pm
This just in from NOAA: a tsunami warning is in effect for the state of Hawaii and Southern and Central California — along with all countries with a Pacific Ocean-facing coastline. The tsunami was generated by a devastating 8.8 earthquake in Central Chile (which has left at least 100 dead) and it could cause damage along coastlines of all west coast countries and all islands in the state of Hawaii.
