SANTA CRUZ — Crowd favorite Galen Licht paddled his way to the top of his discipline Sunday at Steamer Lane, winning the men’s high performance final of the 24th annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival.

Licht, the founder of the UC Santa Cruz Kayak Club, beat Northern Ireland’s Christopher Hobson, Australian Stephen Farthing and Santa Cruzan Dave Johnston in a final that saw the best waves of the event breaking at Steamer Lane.

Over the years sailing events have seen lots of storms, in the 2009 A Cat Worlds, as the fleet race ashore, one sailor was struck by lighting, in the boat park. A week ago, the giant hailstorm hit Perth and out on the water, there was the Australian 2010 Tornado Catamaran Nationals. All I can really say about this week is that there must have been one helluva party going on in English Harbour Antigua over the last few days!  As Tom and Rich from Red Arrow flew home to be met by a huge crowd of supporters at the airport, and Mick and Lia parted ways in Antigua, a host of little rowing boats were speeding (in ocean rowing terms!) towards the Atlantic rowing race finish line.
