In 1993, at Bodega Bay, Russell Lon took his last ride on Longshot, his custom Ketterman built trifoiler, which had just been outfitted with new foil wings. She bolted out of the gate a blasted up to near 50 knots when the back stay parted and she ‘blew up’ scattering pieces about the harbor.

Russell emerged shaken but unscathed. Longshots parts were gathered and eventually trucked to Southern California.

After four months at sea, on an arduous journey that spanned 8,000 miles of Pacific Ocean, the crew of Plastiki has delivered its environmental message on a sailboat made of bottles.

The club outdistances seven-time Hui Wa’a champ Kaneohe to win its first title in 25 years

The king’s children have finally returned to rule their canoe paddling kingdom.

Na Keiki O Ka Moi — roughly translated as the children of the king — claimed their first Na Ohana O Na Hui Wa’a outrigger canoe paddling title in 25 years yesterday in the organization’s championship regatta at Keehi Lagoon.

Ka Moi ended Kaneohe Canoe Club’s run of seven consecutive titles by amassing 79 points and winning eight races en route to the overall and AAA Division (25-39 crews entered) crowns. Manu O Ke Kai put up a good fight, finishing with 53 points on six race wins, and Koa Kai rounded out the large-club division with 33 points  …  Details

On July 20th, we watched the people in Huahine bless the rudder of the traditional 15 meter outrigger canoe docked in the town of Fare. This special catamaran called Upoo Tahiti, which means “Head of Tahiti,” had a piglet, rooster and plenty of bananas and taro on board. She is one of many outrigger canoes sailing west across the Pacific to China. Captain and designer, Clement Pito, has been imagining this voyage for the past 20 years and his dream had finally come to fruition. 

Pito, bare breasted with two bands of tatoos on his arms, a traditional skirt and a seaweed of necklace, hopes his sailing expedition will bring Polynesians closer to their ancestors who bravely left their homes in Asia and  …  Details
