WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation has created the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame. Three of the nine members of the inaugural class were on hand for the announcement at the Hilton Hawaiian Village this morning. The Hall of Fame honors Hawaii’s legendary kane and wahine o ke kai.. men and women of the ocean who have helped to establish Hawaii as the center of the watersports world. Seven men and one woman join Duke Kahanamoku on the initial list of honorees.

The excitement is reportedly building on the southern most point of Lake Michigan as Super Boat International prepares for the second annual Great Lakes Grand Prix this weekend (August 6-8).
Last year’s event attracted record crowds and exceeded all expectations.
Super Boats International’s CEO, John Carbonell rated it the largest crowd ever for a first-time race.
‘The entire course was lined with spectator craft and I think this year we’ll see even more boats out there following the racing and even more people on the beach,’ he declared.

The best-of-the-best were on display at the 2010 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships, hosted by the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. This year’s championship showcased top-level junior sailors from around the country in four highly competitive fleets, including C420s, Lasers, Radials, and 29ers. Three of the four fleets were won by US Sailing Development Team (USSDT) members.
Mateo Vargas (St. Petersburg Yacht Club) overcame a narrow two-point deficit to USSDT teammate Michell Kiss (Macatawa Bay Yacht Club) to win the Radial fleet. ‘I actually prefer to come from behind,’ said Vargas. ‘I like to be in that position.’ Consistency paid off for Vargas. He pulled away from the Radial contenders and won by 10 points. Kiss finished second, and fellow USSDT member and defending champion, Christopher Stocke (Sarasota Youth Sailing Program) finished third. Three guys, a cause, a canoe and a river.
That pretty much sums up the summer for Dave Kolck, Justin Dworak and Matt Bergmann, who have surrendered their personal lives for two months to raise both awareness and funds toward the historic oil spill along the Gulf Coast.
Kolck, 25, a resident of Dubuque, Iowa, is teaming with Bergmann, 26, and Dworak, 24, both of Galena, Ill., in navigating the Mississippi River from its headwaters through Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois to New Orleans. The three, who stopped in Quincy last week, are working in conjunction with the Louisiana-based, nonprofit Lower Mississippi Riverkeeper organization to draw as much attention as possible to one of the nation’s worst natural disasters  … Details
