SANTA CRUZ — Competitors in the Santa Cruz PaddleFest surf kayak and stand-up paddle event pushed through choppy waters and sideways rain as long as they could Saturday before contest organizers decided the weather just wasn’t going to cooperate.
Organizers shut down the event an hour early, at 3 p.m., and cancelled today’s final rounds at Steamer Lane due to surf and wind conditions.

A THORNBURY shop owner is planning to paddle his way along the River Severn in aid of charity.
Richard Edwards, 34, will be jumping into his 19-foot Canadian canoe to row the 154 miles from Welshpool, in Powys, Wales, to Sharpness, in May.
Richard, who is well known in Thornbury as the owner of gift and framing shop Surroundings, will be completing the five-day trek to raise money for the Stroke Association and a number of local stroke support groups … More

There’s just something about going as fast as nature can push you. Actually, perhaps that’s better said: There’s just something about watching somebody go as fast as nature can push THEM. Most of us don’t, for instance, wear those flying suits and jump off of cliffs, but we like to watch others with the skill and courage do it. In the same vein, most of us don’t strap ourselves to rockets and see how fast we can go, but we certainly like watching people like Paul Larsen, and this year, Paul’s got a whole new rocket to ride!  Â
