Honolulu – What separates Waikiki from every other beach on the planet is the famous Beachboy lifestyle. It involves enjoying the ocean in every way possible from sun-up to sundown, just as it was done by the most legendary Beachboy of all: Duke Kahanamoku. And that’s what today, day four of the 10th annual Duke’s OceanFest in honor of Duke Kahanamoku, was all about. Ron DeMitchell’s first attempt at waterskiing ended with him on his backside in Pontiac Lake.

The Macomb Township resident’s next try was a success, and he took three circles around the lake Friday as part of a recreational outing for people with disabilities.

“I thought that was my best run,” DeMitchell, who is blind, said of his third pass. “It was awesome.”

Compared to the America’s Cup pros who will hit San Francisco Bay in 2013 or even the leaders in the current 10th annual 18ft Skiff International Regatta hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club, those from the local Sail1ing Foundation are at the other end of the scale of fame, as they are in the standings at the bottom of this report.

But it would be hard to find more dedicated sailors anywhere than the dozen or so competitors racing on their home waters this week.
