Jay Leno has invited the team from the Iron Men Foundation to detail their lovingly built, new from the ground up, ’32 Ford Roadster. Dubbed the ‘Metal of Honor’, the roadster has been built with new parts donated by American companies and features the signatures of 46 living Medal of Honor recipients.

Volunteers from the Iron Men Foundation then put the all-metal car together piece-by-piece over several months in space donated by Custom Classics Restorations in Island Lake, IL.   …  Pictures and more

Steve Fossett, the millionaire businessman and adventurer perhaps best known for circumnavigating the world nonstop in a hot air balloon, was preparing to break the absolute land speed record — 763 miles per hour — when he died. He was declared dead after the single-engine plane he was piloting disappeared over the east-central mountains of California in September 2007. (The plane and Mr. Fossett’s remains were later discovered near Mammoth Lakes, Calif.)

Dallas-based racer and businessman Charles Nearburg made history at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the Red Line Oil-equipped “Spirit of Rett” streamliner, breaking a 45-year-old land-speed record and also setting the fastest single-engine car record in history with an average speed of 414.5mph. This eclipsed the Class 11 record (409.27mph) set by the Summers Brothers “Goldenrod” in 1965.

The first run of the new land speed record for a naturally-aspirated, wheel-driven car. Record was set September 21st, 2010 at the Bonneville Salt Flats with Charles Nearburg driving. Orange signs whizzing by on the left side indicate miles – recorded speed is an average between mile 5 and mile 6. On this run the average was 416.90 mph.
