Deaf American Inspires Iranian Teenager as Racers Bond On and Off the Track

 In motocross, one of the fastest growing extreme sports, riders tear through rugged terrain. The sound of the roaring engine can let riders know when to shift gears, or if competitors are gaining ground.

But that’s not the case for 19-year-old Ashley Fiolek, who’s deaf.

“Motorcycle riding is a hearing sport, really,” Fiolek told CBS News correspondent Seth Doane. “Being deaf you have to rely on the vibration.”

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — In dry and dusty conditions, the 2010 AMA Racing East Hare Scrambles Championship Series came to a close in Lynnville, Ind., with Husaberg factory rider Mike Lafferty wrapping up a successful season by claiming the Series No. 1 plate with a final round win.

Lafferty, an eight-time champion of the AMA Rekluse National Enduro Championship Series, won the overall at five rounds of the eight-round series.
