San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart has been having a heck of a time for the last three races or so. It’s not that he wasn’t fast enough, or even in a position to win the races, but something has gone wrong every time. First, in Atlanta, he passed Chad Reed heading to the white flag only to end up in a collision with Reed when he made an aggressive move to the inside on the final lap and they both fell. Because of some last-lap shenanigans, Stewart ended up fourth. Then, in Daytona, he had the lead locked down – he was gone – until a mistake landed him on his head and forced him to come from way, way behind to grab a heroic ninth place. BMW’s timing was just right. Due to the economic meltdown, the two-year cycle for sportbike updates finally came to an end. And as it were, BMW took aim to diversify and conquer the exclusive literbike wars.
The result was the S1000RR, and by now everyone knows how that quest turned out. If you don’t, you can read about Kevin’s first ride and our 2010 literbike shootout.
