Word is spreading over the internet that Big Dog Motorcycles is closing its doors. Blogger Cyril Huze is the first to report the company has been calling dealers to inform them that Big Dog Motorcycles is going under. The Wichita Eagle, located in the same city as Big Dog’s manufacturing plant and headquarters, didn’t run the same story but did report that BDM cut another 10 production workers and is down to 22 employees. For the 2012 season, MotoGP will be reverting back to its 1,000cc format (actually, it used to be 990cc, but what’s ten cubic centimeters among friends?). While many MotoGP fans have been awaiting the day that the “big bikes†would return to premier racing with their powersliding, rider chewing, wheelie popping ways, it’s hard to get excited when the first two races of the last 800cc season have been so eventful. Montsegur, a towering promontory in the foothills of the Pyrenees, comes into view at the exit of a sweeping turn in the road. The ruins at the very top are barely visible, but gradually take form as I get closer. From below, it is easy to see why this fortress kept an army of crusaders at bay: a solitary trail – narrow, steep and rocky – winds upward to the summit. A half hour after leaving my riding gear on the BMW 1200GS and out of breath from the climb, I reach the entrance of the castle, which now looms large against the sky.

Obviously, there has been a lot of talk during the past week about San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart, and it hasn’t much involved his racing. He was arrested last week for “impersonating a police officer” because he used some police-like lights in his pickup truck reportedly to ask someone to slow down on the freeway in Florida. We talked to him mostly about his racing, and how this incident affected his racing this week in Dallas, where he finished fourth, because until this legal issue is finished, one way or the other, he’s unable to comment on the incident itself.Â
