It is with great sadness that we bring news of the passing of Motorcycle Hall of Famer Gary Nixon. Nixon died today at the age of 70 in Baltimore Maryland due to complications from a recent heart attack. His accomplishments included back-to-back AMA Grand National titles in 1967 and 1968 and the U.S. National Road Racing Championship on a Kawasaki in 1973. He also competed in the Formula 750 championship, where he was denied the championship due to a point deduction and the ensuing politics. After three states and almost 1000 miles, Motorcycle USA landed in Sturgis yesterday evening, just in time to get some initial impressions from the scene. Rolling into town on the 14, we noticed the rigs of a healthy cross section of OEMs at the second Sturgis exit. People anxious to see and ride the latest models can get their fix at one stop as Can Am, Star, Kawasaki, Victory and Harley-Davidson are all set up there. We’ve been flogging the 2012 Victory Cross Country Tour for the last three days ourselves, with a full review coming when we get back. Travis Pastrana will delay his debut in NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series because of injuries he suffered last week in the X Games.
The 11-time X Games gold medalist was scheduled to make his debut last weekend in Indianapolis. But he broke his right ankle and foot in the Best Trick competition in Los Angeles.
