U.S. Route 101 on the West Coast beats Route 66 any day

When people talk iconic American road trips, conversation automatically turns to the fabled Route 66 and its chintzy old gas stations. But in reality, that iconic drive lies further west, skirting the rugged coastline of California, Washington, and Oregon. Running over 1,500 miles south to north, U.S. Route 101 starts in Los Angeles and ends in Tumwater, Washington, navigating many of the Western U.S.’s finest natural bounties along the way.

With the Billabong Pro Tahiti underway and the forecast predicting a great run of solid swell, we take an inside look at the world’s most infamous wave: Teahupoo.

Location: Teahupoo is on the southwest side of the main island in Tahiti, about an hour’s drive from the capital, Papeete. It is known as the “the end of the road,” as it is the termination point of the only road that follows the southwest coast. The wave itself lies in a coral pass about 500 meters offshore of the main village, a five-minute boat ride or 20 minute paddle to the break.

Every August, Honolulu’s premier ocean sports event kicks off on Waikiki Beach. It’s Duke’s Ocean-Fest, a nine-day tournament with events like tandem surfing, paddleboard racing, and surf polo—water polo on longboards! More than 2,000 athletes from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and the US compete. Now in its 13th year, the festival honors Duke Kahanamoku, Hawaii’s famed Olympic gold medalist and aloha ambassador, who died in 1968. “He helped pioneer and expand surfing to the rest of the world,” says event director Brent Imonen.
