Cardiff by the Sea’s Devon Howard rides a Tyler Surfboards 9’6″ Double Stepdeck, with 10″ 4A Greenough single-fin. The outline of this board was inspired by those being ridden by Nat Young, Bob McTavish, Russell Hughes, Peter Drouyn, and Midget Farrelly in the 1967 surf film Hot Generation, by Paul Witzig. The Double Stepdeck is a heavy, traditional longboard shaped by Tyler Hatzikian, glassed with 10 oz. Volan, however the scooped out nose and tail deck areas allow for the board to flex and twist through sections. Watch how the board bends and flexes as Devon steers it in and around sections to maintain optimum trim speed.
For sheer wacky foolishness, there are probably cities that can come close to San Francisco. They can put on their flash mob pillow fights and bad Santa pub crawls.
But when it comes to organized, structured wacky foolishness, no one is even close. It’s just another reason to love this place.
