In May High Fives brought 11 #HighFivesAtheltes to Maui, Hawaii for a ten-day surf camp. A film was made in association with Fractal Film Co to tell the powerful story of leaving limitation behind and using surfing as a way of healing together as a community.
“The camps are getting people to step outside of their comfort zone so that they can positively grow and move forward — get past that injury,” says Roy Tuscany, High Fives Executive Director. Most athletes were not avid surfers before their injury, but surfing allows for motion and independence unlike any other adaptive sport.
“When you come here, it feels different than where I’ve ever been in the world,” said Josh Dueck, an Athlete of the High Fives Foundation who was injured in a ski accident in 2004.
“Luckily with a group like High Fives, there’s a ton of support, and they want to help you figure it out,” said Bond Camp, a High Fives Athlete on the trip. “That’s what I think High Fives is all about.”
My good friend Kody Pollock have been working on this video for the past year and a half. It has been a wild ride, Security Guards, hundreds in the gas tank, countless flat tires, but all of that has been worth it because BMX is all about the fun and that is definitely something we were never short on.
Imagine going back to the pre-smart phone age for a second and channeling the vibes of an O.G surf trip. Keep it basic, dial in the swell, load the wagon and listen to some punk. Visit the bakery as often as possible, sleep in a weird motel, talk about babes and psych on your favourite surfers. Sometimes it’s nice to keep it real on #TheSearch.
