On December 21, 2012, Greg Long dealt with what is now one of the most widely known nightmares in the storied history of surfing. After being buried beneath five murderous waves in the lonely waters atop the Cortes Bank, Greg’s unconscious body was recovered by his friends John Walla, Dennis Kalani “DK” Walsh and Frank Quirarte. In the ensuing minutes and hours, an equally well-organized and utterly improvisionally choreographed rescue led by EMT’s John Dowell and Jonathan Hoover went down 100 miles offshore. It was a ballet of planning, technology, communications, emergency medicine and sheer luck that ultimately saved Long’s life.
